Liang, qian and regional definitions
Modern mainland liang = 50 g and qian = 5 g. These are not the Taiwan or Hong Kong definitions. Select tai-liang (37.5 g) or tai-qian (3.75 g) explicitly for Taiwan. Hong Kong sima tael is 1/16 of a 604.78982 g catty; sima mace is 1/160 of that catty. This is unit arithmetic, not medication or prescription guidance. Historical definitions require their own period and source.
Sources: Taipei government measurement reference (1 tai-qian = 3.75 g); Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Council, Appendix 2 (sima unit ratios). Exact regional factors are retained until display rounding.
Common liang to grams values
Mainland China uses 1 liang = 50 g, and 10 liang = 1 jin (500 g). Taiwan uses 1 tai-liang = 37.5 g.
| Amount | Grams | Ounces / pounds |
|---|---|---|
| 1 liang | 50 g | 1.76 oz |
| 2 liang | 100 g | 3.53 oz |
| 5 liang | 250 g | 8.82 oz |
| 10 liang (1 jin) | 500 g | 1.10 lb |
| 1 qian | 5 g | 0.18 oz |
| 1 Taiwan tai-liang | 37.5 g | 1.32 oz |
You will see liang on Chinese kitchen scales, in traditional medicine shops and at food markets. Gold and jewellery in Hong Kong use the sima tael instead, which is a different unit.
