Flat width, garment circumference or body size?
A value such as 胸围 52 does not tell us whether the seller measured a flat width or a full circumference. Leave it unconfirmed until the seller’s instructions make this clear. Double a confirmed flat chest, waist or hip width; do not double shoulder width or garment length. A finished garment includes room for movement and is not the same as a body measurement.
What does 斤 mean on a Taobao chart?
This tool uses modern mainland China jin: 1 jin = 0.5 kg. A seller’s 90–110 jin recommendation therefore means 45–55 kg, not 90–110 kg. Recommended height and weight alone cannot guarantee a clothing size.

How to read a Taobao size chart
A short, practical guide to the 8 Chinese measurement words you'll see on every Taobao, 1688, Shein and Temu listing — and the difference between body and garment measurements.
Quick answer: On Chinese size charts, 胸围 means bust or chest, 腰围 means waist, 肩宽 means shoulder width, 衣长 means garment length, and 臀围 means hip. Measure in centimeters first, then compare with the seller's chart.
01 /The 8 Chinese measurement words you must know
These appear, in one order or another, on every Chinese size chart. Memorise them once and you can read any listing.

02 /The two number formats you'll see
Format 1 — Letter sizes (S, M, L, XL)
Familiar letters, but calibrated for slimmer frames. Plan to read one to two sizes larger than you normally wear. See the women's converter for the exact mapping.
Format 2 — 160/84A national-standard codes
The Chinese national standard (GB/T 1335). Three parts:
- 160 — wearer's height in cm
- 84 — bust (women) or chest (men) in cm
- A — body type. Y = slim, A = standard, B = fuller, C = curvy
So 160/84A fits a 160 cm woman with an 84 cm bust, standard build. Full decode on the 160/84A page.
03 /Body or garment? The trap that catches everyone
The biggest source of returns from Chinese stores: a listing says 胸围 96 cm and you read it as your bust measurement, when actually the seller is reporting the flat-laid garment width (half the circumference, doubled).
· 成衣尺寸 · chéng yī chǐ cùn — finished garment measurement
· 身体尺寸 · shēn tǐ chǐ cùn — body measurement
If the seller doesn't specify, assume garment. Double the number to compare with your body.
04 /Example Taobao chart rows
胸围 96 cm
If the seller says this is finished garment measurement, it may mean the garment bust circumference is 96 cm. Compare it with your body bust plus ease.
肩宽 38 cm
Shoulder width is measured across the garment from shoulder seam to shoulder seam. It does not double like bust or waist.
衣长 58 cm
Garment length usually means shoulder to hem for tops or dresses. It helps predict whether an item will sit cropped, regular or long.
05 /The 3-step Taobao buying ritual
- Measure your bust, waist and hip in centimetres.
- Add 2–4 cm of ease for woven fabrics (cotton, denim, blazers).
- Match to the 胸围 (bust) column on the listing. If you fall between sizes, size up.
06 /Read the buyer reviews — the real chart
Below every product, scroll past the studio shots to 买家秀 · mǎi jiā xiù (customer photos). Each post almost always lists the buyer's height and weight in cm/kg. Find a reviewer with your build and copy what they ordered.
Three Chinese review terms to look for:
- 偏小 · piān xiǎo — runs small → size up
- 偏大 · piān dà — runs large → size down
- 正码 · zhèng mǎ — true to size
